Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation

With the ever-growing number of people taking part in sport, combined with the increasing competitiveness and intensity of physical exercise, the demand for Sports Massage and Sports Therapy is also increasing. Therefore these therapies are more to aid recovery and enhance performance.

As athletes are looking to improve performance and increase competitive edge, they need to adopt a training schedule to enhance skill, strength, stamina, suppleness and speed. No matter which sport you compete in, the aim is nearly always to increase the level of training and thereby subject your body to gradual and controlled over-use.

It is this over-use that may often create problems and imbalances in the soft tissues. If these are ignored and allowed to become chronic, not only will they hinder rate of improvement, but also in many cases performance may well suffer and ultimately this may make you susceptible to more serious conditions. For example, a player involved in a contact sport who is 'carrying' an injury, may not have their usual level of agility. The result might be that they suffer an extrinsic injury because they are not fully prepared for contact from an unexpected tackle.

Massage, therapy and rehabilitation, applied skilfully, are the most effective therapies for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly, they help athletes prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by over-use of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Advanced Bodywork

A wide variety of advanced therapies are used to address old stubborn injuries, joint/muscle pain and arthritis. Scar tissue from severe strain, sprain, cuts and impact injuries or from past operations can also be effectively treated using Myofascial Release. If you have pain or an injury that just won't go away, why not give it a try? See Kipp on the our team page.

At the Back to Action Sports Clinic, not only do we aim to help the athlete, whether through therapy or rehabilitation and prehabilitation, but we offer a specialised service to sports clubs and events.

Injury Prevention Tips

  1. Avoid training when you are tired.
  2. Monitor daily for signs of fatigue, if in doubt ease off.
  3. Never train hard if you are stiff from the previous effort.
  4. Increases in training should be matched with increases in resting.
  5. If you experience pain when training, STOP your training session immediately.
  6. Any increase in training load should be preceded by an increase in strengthening.
  7. Introduce new activities very gradually.
  8. Check over training and competition courses beforehand.
  9. Use appropriate training surfaces.
  10. Train on different surfaces, using the right footwear.
  11. Check training and competition areas are clear of hazards.
  12. Check equipment is appropriate and safe to use.
  13. Allow lots of time for warming up and cooling off.
  14. Treat even seemingly minor injuries very carefully to prevent them becoming a major problem.
  15. Pay attention to hydration and nutrition.
  16. Increase your consumption of carbohydrate during periods of heavy training.
  17. Shower and change immediately after cooling down.
  18. Aim for maximum comfort when travelling.
  19. Stay away from infectious areas when training or competing very hard.
  20. Be extremely fussy about hygiene in hot weather.
  21. Have regular sports massages.

Information for Coaches

There is a lot of pressure placed on the athletes of today, so when injury appears it is really important to act immediately. It is essential that the correct first aid for the suspected injury is used, and it is worth becoming familiar with the most up-to-date cryotherapy treatment.

Sometimes the athlete will need to be assured that rest should be programmed into their training plan, to allow the body to recover from a period of intense training, along with regular Sports Massage.

It is also important to ensure that you support the athlete to seek help with even the smallest of injuries, especially if their training has increased and they are very motivated. If injury does prevent them from training, an alternative training plan should be offered.

For advice on this, scheduled Sports Massage, rehabilitation or even better prehabilitation, please do contact us.
