Do you spend a lot of time working at a computer terminal? Holding a child? Standing up for long periods of time? Or sitting in the car on long journeys?
Stand up straight!" "Pull your shoulders back!" As children, we were told to have good posture. Yet we were seldom taught effective ways to accomplish this. Indeed, we were often not even told just what "good posture" is.
The consequences of this information gap can be seen all around us: stiff necks, shoulders hunched forward or pulled tightly back, restricted breathing, and tightness in the thighs, legs and ankles.
Backaches, headaches, and other painful symptoms are often the unfortunate result.
When an individual has poor posture over a long period of time the body's connective tissue (fascia), which covers every muscle and muscle fibre, tightens up and restricts. This tight fascia will then pull the individual into back into the poor posture position the body has grown used to.
A postural treatment plan will include:
Myofacial release can also be used to address other conditions involving fascial restriction such as chronic pain, lordosis (an increased curve in the lower back), kyphosis (the excessive rounding off the upper part of the back and shoulders) and scoliosis (curvature of the spine).
One-sided physical activity, a great deal of sitting due to office work and lack of exercise causes weakness of postural musculature, and this, in turn, brings about faulty posture. Movement and exercise produce strain and relaxation of individual muscles in a rhythmic way and strengthens the entire body. There is no replacement for regular exercise! Our rehabilitation programming crucially supports the treatment for these conditions.
For further advice on poor posture and to discuss your requirements with a therapist please don't hesitate to contact us at the Back to Action Sports Clinic.
